 I started Kearsarge Magazine in 2005 because I didn't know my neighbors. I was born and raised in New Hampshire, and I knew everyone in my neighborhood growing up. I knew who was doing well in school, who had a great soccer game, who liked tomatoes (and who didn't), and who just got out of the hospital and needed some company. We got together for Saturday night suppers; the parents played cards while the kids played games.
But when I moved back to the Granite State in 1996, I realized that it was a different place. I bought a house, and it was months before I even met my neighbors. People moved in and out which I don't remember when I was a kid; once you bought a house you stayed and by the time I met a family they were usually on their way out of state. For the neighbors that remained, I didn't know them more than to say hello at the post office.
So I started the magazine. I figured that if one person met their neighbor or learned something new about their hometown by reading it in the pages of Kearsarge Magazine then I've done my job.
